originAn American song which gained great popularity with many singers and listeners in Ireland. The music by Earl Robinson and the words by Alfred Hayes tell the sad story of Joe Hillstrom, a young Swedish immigrant to the US. He became an effective labour union organiser throughout the West. He did however antagonise some very powerful people and was convicted in very doubtful circumstances of murder and executed in Utah in 1915 by firing squad.
